Most of the time. Sometimes it's just useless. Sometimes it happens to help; often when you have a fitting mental framework that may help you even without help. And it's probably worse for y'all statesians.

I got to 14:44 minutes in when I decided to click off. it's when I felt like I had enough. I'm sorry that I didn't give the full video a watch before I typed this comment, but the video itself continually made me annoyed and indignant the more it went on. I can certainly understand why you grew to form the points you have, and I'm very sorry that you've gone through those rather invalidating experiences that you've described during the start of the video in your therapy sessions. But it feels like a lot of the researched information used to compile your talking points are rather outdated, like the examples of diagnostics and forced institutionalization, things that people within this space have fought to change over the past decades. I'm from Brazil, and here we have had an incredibly large movement against sanitoriums and mental asylums, and we stress the importance of that movement for the health of the patient. But I think that what annoyed me the most is this seeming insistence throughout the video that we therapists only seek to 'correct' wrongful behavior and put you back in line with the rest of the normative crowd. Again, perhaps an outdated idea, or maybe foreign. But myself, my colleagues, professors, and all my contemporaries focus on helping people understand their emotions, how they affect them, to ask them what their goals are, what they want to realize in their life with therapy, and to help them achieve those goals. If their problem comes from a systemic issue, and they want to fight for those things, that's something they should decide to do on their own. But our job as therapists is to help guide them through the emotional turmoil these issues might cause. If you see that as simply treating a symptom, then I suppose that's fair, but you cannot fight back a disease with a weak body

I'm pro-talk therapy with a good therapist who's right for you which is far easier said than done. But the SOMATIC therapies you mentioned are incredible and there are many more. For anyone interested (potentially for ND and post trauma folks), you could look into tapping, touch field therapy, craniosacral therapy, ketamine assisted psychotherapy, vagal nerve stimulation (not sure what it's called), and neurofeedback, if it counts. Talking to your body is apparently a thing so I'll be trying that ✌️

Your story was gut wrenching, huge respect for being able to talk about it (again) to educate us. As a person with AuDHD I am personally still coming to terms with the balance between seeing my diagnosis as a divergence vs disorder. Currently I lean more to seeing ot as a disorder, since I have a lot of struggles with things that neurotypicial people struggle with. Especially my ADHD, where I feel like my mind literally works against itself. This was an amazing video however, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experiences. As someone studying to become a psychologist, while also being a convinced socialist, I am trying to find a way to join these worlds together

We focus so much on punishment that we forget that, really, we should focus on what the victim's healing journey looks like. Thank you for this video, it's so important to have this conversation. Although I'm not the victim of sexual crimes I have been the victim of crimes as a child and that's all I'll say on a YT comment, please respect this. Justice for me looks like the people that wronged me getting the help they clearly need and to grow and truly see what they have done with absolute regret and remorse. To truly understand that and to have to live with that is, to me, enough of a punishment. Punishing them with years in prison, if it would even make it that far in court which I don't think it would without killing me, is the complete opposite of that.

Therapy community needs to standardize and reform its training. I cant believe how many therapists don't have a inkling of understanding of common mental conditions like OCD, ADHD, etc. They always give a safe, blanket diagnosis or "depression, Anxiety". That helps NO ONE. EMDR therapy is by far the best therapy put there so if you haven't experienced it, please look into it and give it a try. I was treated with EMDR and now I plan on becoming an EMDR therapist myself.

Present day liberalism does have a tendency to perceive therapy the same way prayer used to be perceived back when religion played a more important political and social role. Yes, both therapy and prayer can provide *individuals* with coping strategies that can temporarily alleviate their anxiety/distress but they don't have the ability to address large systemic issues like poverty, austerity, precarious job conditions or the rise of far-right terrorism, which we simply can't deny all have a major impact on people's *collective* mental health.

So here is the thing, I would agree with that if anyone had ever gone to a therapist and they actually ever gave them a reason for any of their problems. That doesn't actually happen, in fact that would be a major step up. Usually what happens is you sit there spilling your guts until the timer runs out and only to be told...exactly nothing.

I have felt this way for a long time. These doctors typically don’t understand the problems people have with everyday life because they don’t see the struggles of everyday life as a problem. Their pay and prestige may be insulating them. It’s strange to have a doc not be self aware enough to know that some problems require collective action to truly address.

I went to uni to learn psychedelic assisted psychotherapy in Texas, a highly problematic state to pursue this type of career in, completed my undergrad in psychology with a minor in sociology, combined healing modalities with critical theory perspectives to really have a nuanced perspective about the dynamics of healing in this system. You've really don't a fantastic job defining and explaining things in such a concise and personable manner. Thank you for your insight and vulnerability on this essay. After realizing why people were sick ( capitalism) I was inspired to instead switch my focus to a MS in IO Psychology, the psychology of work. I'm hoping to integrate psychedelic assisted resistance into the workplace to help awaken and heal those from inside the system, that way a non violent reform can hopefully come. Sounds big, but hopefully we all can leave an impact like you did with this video!

I dont think the idea itself of therapy is bad. Humans who use it wrongly are what causes it to be perceived bad. To address the root cause of human suffering is to address humanity itself. For as many people there are that can see the abusurdity of society there is more poeple blind to it and those who ignore it because it benefits them.

As an American, the entirety of my mental healthcare is infested by capitalist gaslighting. They will do and say anything to get you to agree to an expensive but ineffective treatment. Then when you get into the recipricacy of data related to this field, suddenly you start to get the impression that these people have no idea what they're doing. Either that or they do know what they're doing and they're choosing to render ineffective care. If I tell a therapist I can't afford to see them because they're charging 300 a session, I'm being irrational. I should absolutely bankrupt myself jumping through all of their little hoops just so I can be told I still am not doing enough.

What we need is a ’big sister’ to listen, be there for us, root for us, care and sometimes be outraged with us at injustice. But helps us prioritize our own well being sometimes, or call us out if we’re being too selfish or to poke us into movement if we’re being bogged down too much.

I find your story very interesting and I relate to how you healed yourself by learning about feminism and the system we live in. I was institutionalized and suffered physical, psychic, and sexual violence in the hospital. Since I was so traumatized by that experience, I couldn't go back to therapy. I learned and developed new concepts about the state, psychiatry, property, etc, which helped me move on and ultimately formed me as an anarchist. The answer to our ailments is not in therapy and drugs, but in understanding and taking action against the system!

I have always loved both music and psychology but I've always wanted to be a therapist thinking that I would be helping those I talked to but this has outlined very effectively how no matter the intentions I would only be furthering a system I fundamentally disagree with, I'm going to make music now, absolutely amazing vidi.

I’ve never had a therapy experience that actually helped me, so I read as much as I can to be a good support to myself. I use the internet to find resources that help me heal myself. I spend time with my conscious friends offline as well, though I wish I had more of them. There’s an abundance of junk online of course, but there are also nuggets of wisdom here and there if one has the critical thinking skills needed to discern them. If it’s super popular, odds are it’s some sort of scam or propaganda. Self love and compassion are the core of a practice of healing the psyche in the sort of societies that have subjugated us all. Be well and trust your intuition friends. ❤️

"Asking 'what about the rapists' in the context of prisons ignores the fact that the police and the prisons are the rapists." This line hit me like a fucking truck.

Men are taught that being vulnerable they will lead to being abandoned. That is a very motivating threat when you're desperately lonely and disconnected already.

Capitalists, Communists, Socialists, etc, etc...doesn't matter. These systems/ideologies are just a part of the human experience. Yes, they permeate everything, but they are not to blame. In fact, the blame game seldom helps. Sometimes only acceptance and keeping on living is all we can do. This is not a paradise. This world is meant to be chaotic, dark, traumatizing, otherwise, we would not have incarnated. We would have stayed in our original state.

Hi Kathrin! Not sure if you remember me - I'm Amber, and I met you in my first year of uni when we were doing some activism stuff together. The opening anecdote of this video hit me like a truck, and I adore how you ended up tackling a subject like this (one that a lot of our contemporaries are very quick to downplay or shy away from) with such empathy and grace. There are men in my life that I have been seeing are in pain for so long, and it physically hurts that this is such a big issue that isn't being handled with the respect and care it deserves. Thank you so much for this video ❤

I agree with your main overall take here, but please understand that oppositional defiant disorder is no joke. I have no doubt it can be weaponized against people who are different, but that doesn't make it completely bs.
